Familiarisation Day
- 3 hours £ 20
A familiarisation day with your dog should focus on safety, calm exposure, and positive shared experiences. The aim is to help your dog associate you, new environments, and routines with comfort and trust.
Key principles
- Keep the day calm and unhurried.
- Let the dog explore at their own pace.
- Reward curiosity and relaxed behavior.
- Avoid overwhelming stimulation.
- End sessions before the dog becomes stressed.
Plan for the day
1. Calm arrival
Start in a quiet environment with minimal noise and people.
Allow your dog to:
- sniff freely
- explore gradually
- choose whether to approach people
Avoid forcing interaction or excessive excitement.
2. Gentle bonding activities
Bonding works best through calm shared experiences.
Good activities:
- hand-feeding treats
- short play session
- basic positive reinforcement training
- sitting quietly together
Simple training cues like “sit,” “touch,” or name recognition can build trust quickly.
3. Scent-based exploration
Dogs relax through sniffing.
- create a sniff trail with treats
- use a snuffle mat
Sniffing lowers stress and builds confidence.
4. Introduce new people gradually
- have people sit sideways rather than face-on
- Avoid crowding
- Let the dog approach first
- reward calm interactions
Ask people not to lean over the dog or pet immediately.
5. Quiet rest periods
Dogs can become overstimulated during social days.
Schedule calm breaks:
- quiet room or create
- low lighting
- soft bedding
- chew toy or lick mat
Rest is essential for reducing anxiety.
6. Shared positive routine
End the day with something predictable and comforting:
- calm walk
- feeding routine
- Grooming if the dog enjoys it
- cuddle/settling time
Consistency helps dogs feel secure.
